Expedition Africa is an Adventure Race of note! You don’t know what an Adventure Race is? Neither did I… Until they brought it to the Garden Route. Our home playground. Nowadays known as the #HomeOfAdventure (by the way, are you following us on Twitter yet? @KnysnaWayside 🙂 ).
What is an Adventure Race?
An Adventure Race is a race without directions, in this case over a length of over 500km, where teams of 4 people each will have to find their way from one checkpoint to the next, navigating only with maps and compasses. No GPS’s allowed! To get from one point to the other the teams will be trekking, mountain biking, kayaking, canyoneering (yes, this is a verb, just google it, like I did…) and orienteering. I would get lost! But I must admit the whole concept of Expedition Africa sounds very, very exciting!
There are 54 teams of 4 people each, from 19 different countries participating in this massive event, taking place on our proverbial doorstep from May 15 – 22, 2016. The winners are expected to reach the finish on Wednesday, the real ‘hero’s’ will take a little longer…
All teams will be fitted with live tracking devices and the teams can be followed (via www.kineticgear.org/gps-tracking) so you can see when they race or when they take a break. And check out all the activities they do, and you could do too when you next visit our area.
Did I tell you yet that the teams decide themselves if, when and where they sleep?
I would have booked in at the Knysna Wayside Inn! Do my own outdoor activities, and follow them on the internet. But that’s only because I am not an Adventure Racer….
P.S. The guys on the billboard outside Knysna are our local guys! We wish them luck, lots of luck!
