Karoo to Coast mountain bike race
The Lions Karoo to Coast is a 100km offroad race from Uniondale to Knysna via the Prince Alfred’s Pass. Not for the faint-hearted, but worth the effort, rewarded by spectacular views and enthusiastic support along the route and at the finish. There are nine waterpoints (including the finish point) on the 100km route. This year, for the first time, and in response to the request of riders – there will be more food at points as from the Buffelsnek, which is approximately half way through the event. Please note that it is not guaranteed that all riders will receive food at points as it depends on the consumption by riders passing before them. There will be sufficient water and Powerade at all points for the 4500 riders. It is highly recommended that you also carry your own preferred snacks and liquids on your person on the day.
This yearly event attracts riders from throughout South Africa, and is always a highlight on many riders’ calendars.
The route is a one-way route from Uniondale in the little Karoo, ending 100km later in Knysna along the Garden Route’s scenic coast. B&B’s, guesthouses, but also individual home owners open their homes to the thousands of riders who descend onto the greater Uniondale area the day before, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie next to none. Even though the starting point of the race is more than 700m. elevated above sea level, this is not an easy downhill race at all.
It is however one you will not easily forget!
